Plaza Miranda in the heart of Quiapo is a sprawling community of market vendors, traders, shoppers, religious devotees and fortune tellers. This district of Manila is known for selling a wide range of items from herbal products and amulets to pirated DVDs and cheap electronics. It is also famous for the Feast of the Black Nazarene which occurs every 9th of January - the largest procession and spectacle of faith in the Philippines.

With the culmination of the Imbayah Rice festival in Banaue, Ifugao province, the country is facing unprecedented inflation of the price of rice. The celebration that occurs once in three years heralds the end of the harvest period and hopes for another fruitful planting season to bring food to some of the 75 million in the country.
The high price of rice would lead to several more increase of costs of basic commodities and put more load to the heavy burden of the Filipino.
The yoke on Juan de la Cruz’s back nears the point beyond the bearable credence, and day by day the gap of the have’s and the have not’s widens. Rice, being the country’s staple, is now a premiere commodity in a country where 12 million people could not meet the 27.8 pesos a day threshold for food.

Three decades of war in Cambodia have left scars in many forms throughout the country. Unfortunately, one of the most lasting legacies of the conflicts continues to claim new victims daily. Land mines, laid by the Khmer Rouge, the Heng Samrin and Hun Sen regimes, the Vietnamese, the KPNLF, and the Sihanoukists litter the countryside. In most cases, even the soldiers who planted the mines did not record where they were placed. Now, Cambodia has the one of the highest rates of physical disability of any country in the world. While census data for Cambodia is sketchy, it is generally accepted that more than 40,000 Cambodians have suffered amputations as a result of mine injuries since 1979.
